WASHINGTON, D.C. (August 9, 2020) — Vice President Joe Biden’s commitment to halt the proposed Pebble Mine, which the Trump Administration opened the door to following a veto by the Obama-Biden Administration, is the right call for wildlife, Native American and Alaskan communities, and Bristol Bay.
“Bristol Bay is the most important sockeye salmon fishery in the world, supporting 13,000 jobs and $1.5 billion in economic activity. Joe Biden understands we cannot afford to risk allowing this pristine ecosystem — which supports 190 species of birds, 40 species of mammals, and 29 species of fish, including all five species of North American pacific salmon — to become a toxic, heavy metal-laden soup,” said Collin O’Mara, president and CEO of the National Wildlife Federation Action Fund. “Vice President Biden was absolutely right in 2014 when the Obama-Biden Administration vetoed the project, and he’s absolutely right today in standing with the overwhelming majority of Tribes, Alaskans, and America’s sportsmen and women in opposition to Pebble Mine.”
